LECTURES

Week 5: Lecture 5

Letters

The complexity of each individual letterform is neatly demonstrated by examining the lowercase ‘a’ of two seemingly similar sans-serif typefaces—Helvetica and Univers.

Letters / Maintaining x-height

Curved strokes, such as in ‘s’, must rise above the median (or sink below the baseline) in order to appear to be the same size as the vertical and horizontal strokes they adjoin.

Letters / Form / Counterform

Developing a sensitivity to the counterform (or counter)m is really important in typeface design. Knowing the negative space outside the form of the letter for, aids in the readability and legibility of formatted text.

Counterform examples:

Letters / Contrast

Design principle: contrast is one of the most poweful dynamic in design.
- Used when you want to differentiate different sets of informations

INSTRUCTIONS

Task 2: Type expression -  Typography exploration & communication

In this task 3 different text were given, I choose "The role of Bauhaus thought on the Modern Culture". I found this text were more interesting in terms of ideas for my illustration.

Research & Sketches:  Week 5

Research:
First  I wanted to get some inspirations for my text, those are the ones that I found intersting:

Sketches:
Those are the sketches that I did based on the inspirations I got. The sketches are hand-drawn.

Second attempt: Week 6
Mr. Vinod advised me to go for my 2nd and 3rd idea and improve it.
I had to work on the ragging and change the paragraph's placement.

FEEDBACK
Week 6:
General:
Specific:The line length should always be the same for a text, otherwise the reader would think that the paragraphs are not related.
Do not exceed the grid, your design has to follow the grid

REFLECTION

Experience: I find that very interesting but challenging to work with a single text and coming up with different ideas of illustration.

Observation: Similar to task 1, coming up with ideas is much more complicated than actually realising the work. Also having too many ideas can be tricky, I'm very indecisive so it was also hard for me to choose only one.

Finding: This task taught me that formatting a text can be both cool and tricky. It's not just about placing the text randomly; it's more about figuring out how to make the text and the title stand out, but it can't be too complicated because the most important thing is that the reader can read the text smoothly.
When it comes to ideas, I've found that having too many options can be confusing, but it's important to explore first and, although it's difficult to choose just one, I think the most important thing is to choose the one you prefer and that you're satisfied with your work.

READINGS

The Vignelli Canon

Pragmatics:
This paragraph discusses the importance of effective communication and clarity in design.

Pragmatics of Design: Any creative effort, no matter how well-designed it is from a semantic and syntactic perspective, will fail if it is not understood. Design should not only look good but also effectively convey its intended message.

Clarity is Crucial: An artifact should be self-explanatory and not require additional explanations. If someone cannot grasp the meaning or purpose of a design, the effort put into creating it is wasted.

Starting Point and Assumptions: Understanding the starting point and all assumptions in a design project is important to fully understand the final result and measure its efficiency.
