Task 2: Visual Analysis

MIB

For task 2 we are required to assess, investigate, document and analyse the existing art/design work we  selected in Task 1. The goal is to do an interpretation of the design principles that we found in task 1 and relate everything to the UNSDG goal chosen.

PHASE 1: OBSERVATION

The photo is in landscape format. In the foreground, we can see the main subjects of the photo, who are people crossing the street dressed up in a mudded and clayed cover attire, wearing blindfolds and carrying many paper bags. In the background, we can see the street and civilians dressed normally. We can also observe that the subjects in the background are blurred. Then, in the background, we can see buildings, which are also blurred. Additionally, there is a difference in color between the foreground, which is darker, and the background, which is lighter. PHASE 2: ANALYSIS

In the foreground, the subjects are in motion (movement), they are walking across the street, which adds to the photo a sense of activity and dynamism. The subjects are all identical and they are all holding paper bags which creates a repetition that enhances the impact of the image compared to if only one person were shown.
The use of different tones between the foreground and the background creates a contrast that draws attention to the primary subjects in the foreground and emphasises their significance within the picture as well.
Furthermore, the fact that they are all identical contributes to a sense of unity within the photo which shows that they are unified by a common goal and activity strengthening the overall impact of the photo. (126 words)

PHASE 3: INTERPRETATION

This photo shows artists from Brazil marching through the streets of New York City, dressed up in a mudded and clayed cover attire and blindfolds to symbolize capitalism.
Such street performances originated in 1957 with The Situationist International, a group of artist and activist. They influenced contemporary street art by using public placesas a site for political expression, resistance, and critique capitalism. (How Did Situationism Influence Art History? | Widewalls, n.d.)
Furthermore, the photographer well captured the signification of the act. We can refer his street photography artworks to Joel Meyerowitz who is known for his vibrant color street photography, especially his work documenting the streets of New York. He helped popularize color photography in the genre and emphasized the importance of light, color, and gesture in capturing moments. (Joel Meyerowitz Photography, Bio, Ideas, n.d.) His art had great impact on street photography. (128 words)

FEEDBACK

Week 4:
For the 2 pictures references you can choose pictures taken by the photographer or what inspired him.
For task 3, since the artwork chosen is a photo, the design that you'll create can be a collage but it has to be related to the picture chosen and your UNSDG.

Week 5: Don't forget to add the references in the text

SELF REFLECTION

Experience: First, I  examined the artwork I chose, by identifying the design elements and what they could signify. I found this quite easy as the photo speaks for itself. By researching the historical background, I learned a lot about certain artists, for example I had never heard of The Situationist International, and I find these artists and their impact very interesting.

Observation: Through this process, I gained insights into how the artist uses design principles to convey the message of his work. Also by undrstanding the historical background of the art performance and the street photography I was had a deeper appreciation of the artwork's significance.
