Task 3: Illustrated Typographic Poster

Task 3: Illustrated Typographic Poster

For this task we were asked to design a typographic poster that explores the art of typography as a visual and expressive element. We had to select a quote and convey it through creative typography, using a combination of typeface families and unique stylistic choices.

Inspirations and sketches 1:
For this task I had 2 different quote in mind: "Make room to bloom" and "Feel it all"
To gather inspiration, I explored Pinterest, where I found some interesting designs that helped me shape my creative direction.

Inspired by the designs I found, I created two different sketches based on the quotes: "Feel It All" and "Make Room to Bloom." Each sketch reflects a unique interpretation of the emotions and themes associated with these phrases.

Inspirations and sketches 2:

After consulting with Mr. Hafiz, I decided to go for the quote "Feel it all" but also to refine my concept to focus on the emotions that stem from within. Here the phrase "Feel It All" embodies the idea of embracing and experiencing the full spectrum of emotions.

I then sketched two different designs to interpret and express the meaning behind the quote.

I submitted both designs for feedback, and the lecturer recommended focusing on the second sketch, as it conveyed the concept more effectively. He suggested that I represent each letter of the word "FEEL" with different feelings or emotions to convey the quote effectively.

Digitalization process:

I started with trying to convey an emotion with each letters of the word feel based on this reference from the movie Inside Out which express emotions using typography in a creative way.

I decided to go with the second design, where I used different fonts for each letter to more effectively convey the emotions.

In Figures 5.2 and 5.3, I experimented with different layouts for the words, as I felt the arrangement in my initial sketch did not effectively capture the essence of the concept. This exploration allowed me to find a more visually engaging composition.

I watched a video from the YouTube playlist provided by the lecturer, which taught how to create fading text using the blend tool. I found the technique intesresting and decided to apply it to the word "ALL" to add depth and emphasis to the design.

After combining all the elements, I felt that the design could be made more dynamic and engaging by replacing the drawing in the center with an actual photo.

I decided to take a picture of myself for the central element of the design. Using Photoshop, I removed the background and edited the photo to fit the composition. In Figure 5.7, I applied a dry brush filter to the image using Illustrator to give it a textured, artistic effect that blends seamlessly with the overall design.

Finally, I applied a Gaussian blur to the image, the word, and the surrounding elements to create a luminous, dreamy effect. This helped to soften the overall look and enhance the visual impact, adding a sense of depth and atmosphere to the design.

Final Artwork:

The final artwork is slightly different from the initial sketch to make it more engaging and dynamic. Each letter in the word "FEEL" represents a distinct emotion through its design and color:

  • The "F" is bold and angular in red, symbolizing anger with its sharp and intense appearance.
  • The first "E" is smooth and rounded in yellow, evoking joy.
  • The second "E" tilts downward and is blue, reflecting sadness through its posture.
  • The "L" is curvy and irregular in purple, portraying fear with its trembling, unstable form.

Additionally, I aimed to make the word "ALL" more striking and impactful by incorporating a bold 3D effect.

REFLECTION

This task allowed me to explore a creative journey where I experimented with various design elements to visually communicate a quote that I like. I think the main challenge of this task was translating emotions into letters, this task pushed me to think critically about how each letter could reflect an emotion while maintaining balance and coherence within the design and I struggled a lot to find the right typography that would convey these emotions effectively. I also struggled a lot in deciding how to layout the words as it felt very messy at first.
But overall, this task was both challenging and rewarding. It pushed me to think creatively and experiment with different tools and techniques, including blending fonts, photo manipulation, and applying various effects.
