Task 3: Design

After analyzing the chosen design in Task 2, for Task 3 we are required to create a design work inspired by or in reaction to the design and related to the UNSDG chosen. For that we have to apply design principles in our creation by using any suitable medium/materials to convey our message visually.

MOODBOARD:

Based on the SDG goal that I chose, which is SDG 12 "Responsible Consumption and Production"; I've decided to focus on a topic that is well-known but very problematic nowadays: Fast Fashion. Fast fashion has revolutionized the fashion industry at a cost to the environment. The fast fashion business model relies heavily on the exploitation of resources, leading to mass production. With the cheap prices that this business model offers, mass consumption is also at its peak. To conclude Fast fashion has a big impact on overconsumption and overproduction.

For my design I would want to do a collage and include those design principles:
- contrast
- emphasis
- movement
- gestalt laws
- balance

Visual references:
Those are some references that inspires in terms of color and composition.

Figure 1 inspires me because of the constrat used to show the different world.

Figure 2 & 3 inspire me beacuse of how strong the messages are but also how easy the messages behind them are to understand.

Sketches/Ideas:

Sketch 1:

As my idea is to denounce the fast fashion industry my sketch 1 shows a land full of waste (mostly clothes), with the earth, a person on top who is blindfolded and factories at the back. I will use different design princples such as emphasis and contrats to differ the waste, the factories and the person and the earth. Also balance and repetition will be use at the top of the collage.

Sketch 2:
For my 2nd sketch, I entend to use different design principles such as movement in the middle which represent models walking down the road from the factorie. Constrast as well to differ the land and the subjects and gestralt theory which is showed by the continuity (models walking from the factory)

Sketch 3:
For my 3rd sketch, the idea behind it is to divide the image in two with one side in black and white and the other full of colors, which will show a contrast, I aslo intend to incorporate repetition for some of the subjects like the factories and the billboards. Finally movement will be used as seen in the right part of picture with people throwing money in the air.

Final Design:

Final Collage - Fast Fashion

For my final design, I decided to create one that denounces the impact of fast fashion, which is related to the UNSDG 12, "Responsible Consumption and Production," that I chose. Fast fashion not only has an impact on the planet but also, the working conditions of employees are most of the time unethical.
To develop this design, I applied various design principles such as contrast, emphasis, balance, Gestalt laws (principle of continuation), and words.
At the bottom of the image, I employed the principle of continuation by gradually transforming the outfits of the subjects (the models) into trash bags. Additionally, to highlight the negative aspects of fast fashion and for the viewers to pay attention, I emphasized on the workers at the bottom right and the pile of wasted clothes at the top left to underscore the environmental and social impacts.
I also used contrast with opposite colours to illustrate the two sides of fast fashion, making the "hidden side" catch the attention of the observer. Furthermore, asymmetrical balance between the top and bottom sections was utilized to enhance visual interest. Finally, to effectively convey my message, I integrated words made out of clothes for a stronger impact.

FEEDBACK

Week 6: Try to rethink your composition. The 2 first ideas are good but there is no focal point, there is too many elements. The third one has balance and has a focal point but you can proceed with 1 and 2 if you can make another composition.

Week 7: My first draft were too simple, a collage is composed with at least 20 layers, I should go for the 2nd one but something is missing.

SELF REFLECTION

Experience: For my Final task, I found it quite hard to find ideas of design, since we have to incorporate design principles as well.  It took me several days to settle on an idea, and even then, I found it difficult to be completely satisfied with my work due to my perfectionist tendencies. However, overall, I thoroughly enjoyed these seven weeks, as they allowed me to showcase my creativity and explore various design principles that will be useful for my future projects.

Observation: I noticed that sometimes simple design are much more appreciated, the complex one might seems too messy and it might be diffucult to spot the design principles.
